We drove around Sri Lanka from Colombo to Kandy to Nuwara Eliya to Hikkaduwa in the back seat of his sedan, chatting occasionally and lazily while staring out at the lush hillsides, careening around the never-ending switchbacks, through tea plantations that convey a feeling of being transported to British Ceylon circa 1830.
After dinner I drank tea while they serenaded us with their acoustic guitars around a fire, under the stars in the desert with a thousand candles burning on the hillside.
I quickly learned that miming toilet is incredibly embarrassing and thus promptly repeated the phrase Hwajeongshil Odi Isayo (Where is the bathroom) a million times so I would never forget!
